Consistency, or a Slow Death

Think about when you go out for a run.

If you can pace the entire time without stopping, everything feels great and you are on cloud nine after it is over.

But if you go on a run that has quite a bit of climbing, how does it feel when you have to stop for a second/minute? Usually at first it seems nice, get a quick recharge so you can get after it again, but isn’t it much easier to stop again later?

Before you know it, its getting dark out and you are wondering why you came out to run in the first place, and everything hurts. Or you finish a race way behind the time goal you set for yourself.

If you continue pacing and don’t stop, it is harder to stop when it gets challenging because you don’t want to break momentum. When you stop to take a breather, it is much easier to justify doing it again when things get hard.

The key is not to be perfect, trying to go 100% the entire time. Maybe you have to walk, or slow your running pace down, but you need to keep going.

Life is the same way in that you need to keep going. Sometimes you hit massive obstacles and need to re-evaluate your strategy, but that doesn’t mean you just give up and go binge Netflix for 8 hours.

Once you give yourself permission to give up and not follow-through on your promises (to yourself or others), it becomes easier to do that over and over again. Be impeccable with your word and do work that needs to be done.

Sometimes, as the old saying goes, you just have to throw sh*t at the wall to see what sticks. If you aren’t sold on your direction or what you are doing, do something else. It takes some nerves, skills, and luck, but with hard work and faith you can change direction.

Of course, always be grateful for the one life you have, your existence in and of itself is a miracle. Enjoy your life, and give yourself down time to not be perfect. Take the weekends off and enjoy yourself, but make your five working days equivalent to ten of the average person.

If you choose to continue to stop, then life just happens to you and you become unhappy. Ambitions go unfulfilled, wisdom and experiences are left on the table, and you are living your life how others want you to live it.

But you can break that cycle by making the decision to keep moving forward. Keep moving forward so that you and your family (present and future) can be set for life.

Consistency, or a slow death. You choose what happens to you.
