The One Thing You Can Do To Be A Better Writer

Simple but not easy.

In today’s day and age, most people want a quick and easy solution to something.

The issue here is that they are looking for solutions to wants and desires, not problems.

Solutions and problems go together like chocolate and peanut butter, so in this case our problem is that maybe your writing is not where you want it to be.

Whether that be its quality, audience reach and impact, or something else, it is just not there yet. Ever heard of the principle of specificity? It goes like this:

If you want to be good at something, repeatedly do that thing.

Do you want to be good at push ups? Do a lot of push ups.

What about being a nicer person? Practice being nice.

So in our case, if you want to be a better writer, you need to write repeatedly. Everything you write doesn’t have to be super popular or even great, but for every thirty stories you write maybe one will be pretty good

Over time, with practice and repetition, maybe every three or four in thirty will be greater than good. But the point is that you have to write in order to be a better writer. Take that point away from this story if you take nothing else.

Here are two other quick things that will help you be a better writer if you want extra credit:

  1. Read more. Start with On Writing by Stephen King. Free if you google it.
  2. Publish stories. You will get better faster with metrics and feedback.

Of course, have fun with it and don’t do it for the money. You get money eventually when you become great at what you do, writing or otherwise.

Good luck, have fun, stay safe.
