This Is What The Path To Success Looks Like

Cold, dark, lonely.. but not always

It’s 5:12 AM, 2 degrees, and I really don’t want to be here.

But this run I did this morning is the perfect analogy for the path to success — cold, dark, lonely, unpopulated. Not to say it is always like this, never and always are strong words that should be used carefully, but sometimes this is the way it is.

The key though if you do want to succeed is to keep moving forward.

There are many days where you don’t feel like doing something that you know needs to get done, nobody is helping you and many people are doubting you. Your inner voice wants you to sleep in, procrastinate, and make poor (but easy) decisions. None of that matters, if something needs to get done then you must do it if you want to reach a higher level of success.

I’ve ran on this path many times when it is 80 degrees and sunny, the temperatures are perfect and many others are out on the trail. However when things get tough and a little uncomfortable, there is nobody in sight. The same can be said for any endeavor, when things get tough a lot of people give up and either take the easy path or take no action. If everybody took action when things were tough then there would be a lot more millionaires and satisfied people walking around.

However, in our modern society we have acclimated to be so comfortable that the slightest discomfort or inconvenience is seen as an obstacle that takes substantial effort to get through. Or we just give up.

I wrote a story earlier about why you should expose yourself to suffering so you can better handle suffering and be more competitive in society. Continuing to move forward on the path when it is uncomfortable and inconvenient is a perfect way to build up your resilience.

What you will find over time, is that by exposing yourself to suffering and hard times you appreciate the good times (which do come) even more. And when life then turns around and throws more challenges at you, you can be much better equipped to handle them.

As the saying goes, “Hard choices, Easy life. Easy choices, Hard life”.

What kind of choices are you making today?
